Lunchables Yuk!As a teacher and a mother I can not stress enough the importance of involving yourself at a very early stage in the stimulation of your child's development through play, reading, art, discussion and so on. But it is equally important that you clearly understand how your child's nutrition plays an important role in his or her development. Fresh fruit, vegetables and non-processed foods are going to help your child concentrate better, have more energy through the day and ultimately live a healthier and more fulfilled life.

A recent study done of 30 interventions in 23 countries by the National Institute for Early Education Research shows very clearly how these early childhood interventions gave rise to "substantial cognitive, behavioral, and health benefits as well as schooling outcomes that were sustained over time" Authors Milagros Nores and Steve Barnett also showed that combining education and nutritional assistance gave rise to huge benefits in all areas of the child's development.

According to the U.S.D.A. only 36.4 percent of U.S. children between the ages of 2 and 19 eat a recommended three to five servings of vegetables per day, and only 26 percent eat two to four recommended daily servings of fruit. Even worse is the University of Bristol study that shows that children given packed lunches for school were nutritionally worse off than children eating the garbage lunches served in many school districts.

The good news can be found in places like Wisconsin where schools that instituted a healthy lunch program featuring fresh fruit and vegetables showed a turnaround in grades, a drop in truancy, fights and tempers.

The lesson here is that if you or a teacher suspect that your child has learning or social challenges it may be very helpful to involve yourself more closely in your child's life and pick the foods you feed your child very carefully. No more Lunchables mom!
