Tee VeePediatrics - The official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics released a study on November 23, 2009 that touched a nerve in me. The findings of the study were that pre-school age children in home based child-care programs were watching TV for 2.4 hours a day.

Other studies have shown that not only does television depress brain activity in everyone (children especially) is effectively replaces creative play and reduces the amount of time children are up and active.

If we are concerned about the growing incidence of childhood obesity, diminished school readiness, underdeveloped social skills and creativity then we need to do something positive to end this alarming trend.

As a teacher I expect parents to take a great interest in their children, their progress and their activities while in my care. I welcome parent involvement because this guarantees that my efforts in the classroom impact the entire household and will provide the child with a broad range of learning opportunities. As a parent the failure of the day care system is our shared failure. If we do not ask the hard questions of our educators we do a disservice to our children.

Please, take an interest in your child's activities throughout the day and - like the T-shirt says - children play to learn, so we had better learn to play!
