easel paintingWhen children do easel painting, they are learning about their own creativity and that art is fun. Painting effectively develops large muscle coordination needed for the large brushstrokes and movements on a large piece of paper. Large muscle coordination is essential in sitting upright for extended periods of time and taking part in physical activities. Children also gain upper body strength and the ability to cross the midline of their body as their hands cross from the left to right and back. They learn how to make decisions about what medium to use, the colors to choose and autonomously decide how to apply the paint to the paper to make it appealing to themselves. All of these skills are essential in learning to read and write.
