Block BuildingWhen children build with blocks they are gaining large muscle coordination, fine motor coordination and hand-eye integration. They will also begin to gain spatial awareness (as they learn how the blocks fit together in space) and a sense of balance (as they begin to make higher constructions). The children will also develop math skills such as one-to-one correspondence, matching, sequencing, fractions, sorting and patterns. These skills are also essential in learning to write.

The block area is a great place to learn cooperative play and social development occurs as children share ideas and responsibility for the building. The blocks help develop color and shape recognition and as the child explores gravity, stability and balance they are also introduced to science.
